Affordable hotels in Taiwan start at about 1200 NT$ for a room. This usually includes a king sized bed, own bathroom, TV, Internet and breakfast.
Around Taiwan there are always cheaper options available, the so called MinSu. A MinSu is a small hotel (hotel-room) run as a family business. If you are going around Taiwan on a bicycle, a MinSu will very often be your only choice within two hours of travel time. It does not mean that you have to be deprived of any comfort. Many of these places have a high standard and can be very cheap starting at 350 NT$ a night.
